You keep calling yourself lazy. Lazy people don't reorganize their bookshelves at 1 a.m. to avoid Chapter 9.

You're not lazy. You're scared. Scared of being seen, scared of being wrong, scared of being read by the person whose voice you can't get out of your head. Lazy doesn't actually exist for writers. Lazy is the catch-all word we use when we don't want to name the real thing. There are at least three different kinds of procrastination, and the cure for each is different. Mixing them up is why you've been stuck in the same loop since March. The diagnosis is uncomfortable. The fix is doable. We name what's actually happening so you can finally treat it instead of repeatedly punishing yourself for the wrong condition.

How to diagnose yours tonight

  • Sit with the project for 5 minutes. Notice the feeling. Name it: dread, exhaustion, or boredom.
  • Ask: would I write the worst-possible-paragraph version right now? If yes, it's fear.
  • Ask: am I sleeping more than 6 hours? If no, it's rest.
  • Ask: am I excited about any project right now? If yes — different one — it's wrong-project.
  • Treat the actual condition. Stop treating all three with willpower.

Lazy is the word writers use when they don't want to name the real thing. Name the real thing. Then you can fix it.
