The Folder Of Almost-Podcasts (And Other Unshipped Ghosts)

I want to talk about a folder on your desktop. You know the one. It contains: cover art (gorgeous), a trailer (recorded twice), an intro jingle (licensed), seven episode outlines (color-coded), and a launch checklist with everything ticked except the box that says launch.

Course creators have this folder. Podcasters have this folder. Game designers have a build of it. It’s the same folder everywhere: a museum of readiness with no opening day.

Why the last step weighs 400 pounds

Every step before publishing improves the thing. Publishing is the first step that exposes the thing — and you, holding it. So your brain, a devoted bodyguard with terrible judgment, invents one more prerequisite. Better mic. Eighth outline. New niche. The prerequisites are infinite because their actual job is to be infinite.

The ugly-ship rule

Everything below gets shipped at “clear,” not “impressive.” Impressive is what version 20 is for — and version 20 only exists if version 1 ships:

The asset Ship-ready means Not required
Episode 1 Audible, useful, under an hour of editing Broadcast polish. Your favorite show’s episode 1 was rough too. Go listen. It’s still up. They left it there.
Course module 1 Teaches one real thing a student can do today Cinematic lighting, a set, a personality overhaul
Newsletter #1 One idea, one link, sent on a day ending in y A content strategy deck for Q4
Game demo One playable loop that’s fun for 90 seconds The skill tree. Nobody’s met your character yet.

The launch-week contract

  • Pick a public date seven days out. Not “soon.” A date. Tell an audience of at least one.
  • Freeze the assets. No new art, no re-records, no font opinions. The museum is closed for construction — permanently.
  • Define done in one sentence (“Episode 1 is live on two platforms”) and refuse amendments from future-you, who cannot be trusted and you know it.
  • Schedule episode 2 before episode 1 ships. Momentum is a better bodyguard than perfectionism ever was.

An unpublished episode isn’t a standard you’re upholding. It’s a conversation you keep rescheduling with people who were ready to like you.

The dare

Open the folder. Pick the asset that’s closest to done. Give it seven days and a public date. The museum’s been lovely. Burn it down and open a shop.

Launch crew: the audiobook “Done Is Its Own Genre,” “The Just-Make-It Planner,” and the master course “No New Projects (Anti-Abandonment Mechanics)” — for everyone whose best ideas keep dying of almost.
