The Midpoint That Reverses Everything (And Why Yours Is Just A Speedbump)

Your plot has a midpoint. You can find it by counting pages. That does not mean the midpoint is doing anything.

The misdiagnosisThe misdiagnosis is that the middle drags because you need more action. So you add a chase or a kiss or a fight.
The real diagnosisThe middle drags because the midpoint scene does not reverse anything. It changes pace. It does not change direction. The real midpoint flips the question — from 'will the hero get the thing' to 'is the hero willing to become the kind of person who gets the thing.'

Midpoint That Works vs Midpoint That Doesn't

Three Questions To Diagnose Your Midpoint

  • After this scene, does the hero want something different than before?
  • Is there a sentence the hero would have said in chapter one that they cannot say now?
  • If you cut this scene, does the climax still earn its weight?

A midpoint that does not reverse the story is just a chapter wearing a name tag.

Find the line in your draft where you can feel the air change. That is your real midpoint. If you cannot find it, that is the diagnosis.

The dare (not assignment)Open your draft. Mark the page that is halfway. Read three pages before, three pages after. Underline the moment something reverses. If nothing reverses, you have your missing beat.
